It’s the PAYE sector’s one and only subsidy
Obviously these savers are a very thrifty, efficient and disciplined bunch to have amassed an approximate total of €14 billion over a period of five or six years.
Why should the heads of government departments and financial institutions be so anxious to get their hands on this money by suggesting new products?
Why the reluctance of some newspaper commentators to let the savers have their money back to spend or reinvest as they think fit? Are they all afraid the economy will be ‘set on fire’ in a reckless spending spree by such an ‘irresponsible lot?’
The SSIAs represent the only worthwhile state subsidy ever received by the middle class or PAYE worker, compared to the billions in subsidies, not always put to the best use or accountability, paid to industry, agriculture, education and infrastructure, year after year.
And no opinion poll has been commissioned either to find out how the hundreds of millions recovered from tax-dodgers in Ansbacher accounts and other overseas tax havens should be best used.
