SF is still in denial about ‘peaceful means’

AT LAST, the cat is out of the bag. Gerry Adams is seeking clarity about unionist intentions (Irish Examiner, April 21).

SF is still in denial about ‘peaceful means’

Is he joking? Maintaining the union with the rest of the United Kingdom is probably top of their list.

And even if that conflicts with the long-term goals of constitutional Irish republicans, it is what we all signed for in the Good Friday Agreement notwithstanding the fact that the new electoral register in the North may be a bit of a body-blow to those who hoped to outbreed the 'enemy.'

Secondly, listening to Mr Adams speak approvingly of what 'the Army' (meaning the IRA) had to say in its unequivocal ultimatum of Holy Week shows that Sinn Féin is still in deep denial as to what exclusively peaceful means actually means.

If he wants a hand in bringing the hard men of the IRA in from the cold, then the rest of us can do our bit, as Bertie Ahern did by finally challenging Sinn Féin in public.

By naming individuals such as Brian Keenan (of 'The Army') who hold inordinate power, but have been elected to nothing save IRA central command);

By insisting that unionists are not alone in demanding an end to paramilitary control of our democratic future;

By getting over our fear of offending Sinn Féin (aka the IRA), we stand to regain some self-respect and an end to their god-forsaken, woolly-headed ideology.
