SOME prison officers work a lot more than others due to their availability and the necessity to provide services to inmates.

The facts and figures are there to prove this. These additional hours come at a cost, and this year the cost of providing all services is a phenomenal 64m. Why must staff work additional hours?

Since 1983, governors have the power to compel them to do so, if there are insufficient staff available voluntarily.
