Visitors give us top marks for cleanliness

SOME time ago when posters saying ’Welcome to Cork, please excuse the litter’ appeared in the city, I was quick to write to you to agree with the sentiments expressed.

Visitors give us top marks for cleanliness

As a tour guide I had often uttered these exact words while introducing visitors to my beloved Cork.

Now that the season has begun I have been introducing our fair isle to American visitors.

We spent 13 days travelling through Galway, Clare (Ennis), Cork (Carrigaline), Killarney and Limerick and our visitors thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

These are well-travelled people and, for most, the trip to Ireland would be one of four holidays they take all over the world and at home each year.

On our farewell night all agreed they would consider our south-west region litter-free and the toilet facilities everywhere were most impressive.

I was quick to get involved when the 'please excuse' posters appeared and I now want to be quick to compliment Dr Tom Cavanagh of the IBAL organisation.

I have already been in contact with Dr Cavanagh and he was really delighted to hear these remarks, but stressed that the local authorities should also be complimented as they are doing their utmost in the fight against litter.

My sincere congratulations to all. Continue the good work as it is obviously showing results.
