False signal on road carnage

SO the use of mobile phones while driving has been outlawed. Well, that’s going to have a huge impact on our road carnage figures. Or is it?

False signal on road carnage

I was nearly killed this summer by a lady motorist who was eating a large choc ice and never saw me. Then there are the cigarette-smoking motorists relaxing as they drive.

And what about radio listeners or drivers in charge of very young children? And serial nose-pickers? The reality is that Irish motorists are being killed generally very late at night in cars being driven at very high speeds on roads that are in very poor condition. The gardaí can put all their resources into catching the rest of us on the Wilton roundabout in Cork doing 36mph at lunchtime, but until such time as this stark reality is dealt with the figures will keep rising and knee-jerk legislation like the phone ban will have little effect.
