Publicans should back the no-smoking laws

TOM O’CONNOR (Irish Examiner letters, June 30) should support Health Minister Micheál Martin and the entire health sector in their efforts to protect workers from the harmful effects of passive smoke.

Publicans should back the no-smoking laws

The evidence that passive smoking seriously damages people's health and even kills is irrefutable and it can't be ignored by a responsible society.

The vintners must play their part in ensuring that this legislation is successful. If the government refused to respond to other health issues, such as the wearing of seatbelts, because some people might ignore the legislation, we would never achieve anything in this area. The proposed smoking ban requires the co-operation of all.
