Action needed over aliens

I read with scarcely little incredulity, the report of Pat Brosnan (Irish Examiner, July 12) concerning the situation at the new Cóbh garda station, where a picture of the Sacred Heart was ordered to be removed by the OPW , for fear of causing offence to the "multi-cultural community" (sic).

Action needed over aliens

The myth that underlies this diktat of the politically-correct OPW worthies, is that Ireland is a “multi-cultural society”. Certainly we have had a motley influx of colourful aliens, 92% of whom are found to be here illegally. That does not constitute a multi-cultural society, but rather a mono-cultural host society forced to pay 300million a year supporting these illegals, until our government gathers the courage to carry out its duty to repatriate them.

So out of touch is our government on this issue of immigration that Minister Brian Cowen has declared Ireland’s borders open from day one to free access for the 150 million citizens of the prospective new EU member states of Eastern Europe, while others have sensibly opted to retain discretionary control for a seven-year, bedding-down period.

The government has convinced itself that neutrality is somehow the only issue to be squared away for a Nice referendum victory in autumn. When they finally start listening to the people, when the score is 2-0, they will find many issues on which they have to do their homework.
