Health authority denies nursing homes claim on contract beds

the Irish Nursing Homes Association (Irish Examiner, Jan 14) that the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) has been cancelling contract beds in order to cut down costs.

The reality is that last year the ERHA spent a total of 50 million on 1,589 partially funded and 1,412 fully funded beds in private nursing homes in the eastern region.

This was an increase of €8m on the previous year.We anticipate we will spend a similar amount in 2003. With funding from the ERHA, the three area health boards in the east pay nursing homes to care for patients. They do not buy nursing home beds.
