Oil cheaper than water – what’s going on?

I READ with interest your article on the sales of Ballygowan bottled water (Irish Examiner, July 3) and was amazed that it costs €4.40 per half-litre (pub price).

Oil cheaper than water – what’s going on?

I’m at a loss to know how this product, which is taken from the ground in the Limerick/Tipperary area, costs so much compared to oil which is taken from the ground in the Middle East, shipped half-way across the world to our oil depots where it is refined and then delivered to our petrol stations all at an average cost to the consumer of 85 cent per litre.

Something isn’t adding up.
