City politicians should back pool funds drive
The council decided to send an all-party delegation to meet the minister for sport and others in a bid to secure funding for a new pool.
It is vital that local TDs support this bid for funding to ensure the pool remains in public hands for the benefit of all in our city.
It is essential also for schools that use the facility because swimming is soon to become part of the primary curriculum. The clubs that use the pool must be allowed also to continue their voluntary work by teaching kids from aged five up to swim at a reduced cost in order to ensure lessons are available to all.
If the city council was more active in promoting public municipal pools it might help reduce some of the enormous pressures on the health service. Swimming is a very healthy exercise and its promotion could cut millions from the national health bill in future.
