Deal would make me a slave to the system

WITH reference to your editorial (Irish Examiner, January 3) that prison officers need to be “more realistic”, I would like to know how I can achieve this.

Are you suggesting that for the next 17 years of my service I should dedicate my life 24/7 either to working in, or to be on call at, Cork Prison?

That is the reality of the deal that Minister McDowell is offering me and that is why no amount of money or spin-doctoring will make it acceptable to me. Dress it up whatever way you want, minister, annualised hours are compulsory overtime to be worked every week with no predictability.
