Now let’s probe the college grants swindle

WE have heard plenty about tax dodgers and offshore accounts.

Now let’s probe the college grants swindle

However, there is one part of this whole swindle which seems to go unnoticed. It is, of course, college fees and grants.

A big percentage of self-employed parents had their children educated free. They were exempted fees and qualified for grants.

We PAYE workers wondered how they managed it while we paid the full whack. It was simple in that they under-stated their income, qualified for grants and then siphoned off their undeclared income into offshore accounts.

I call on the Minister for Education to have the college list checked against the offshore account lists. He will find the same names cropping up in both. There are huge sums waiting to be recovered. They could be used to repair the rundown schools we hear so much about.

This is taxpayers’ money and there is a duty on the minister to recover it.
