US soldiers in Ennis and the state of the union

WHILE attending the Civil Public & Service Union annual delegate conference (ADC) in the West County Hotel in Ennis recently, I witnessed a shocking sight.

On the evening of Friday, May 21, as we were sitting in the bar waiting for dinner to be served a posse of US soldiers in full uniform arrived in the bar.

It just proves that the US military are so cocky and confident about their illegal use of Shannon airport that not only are they landing there fully-armed, and parading their arms, but they are now visiting towns like Ennis many miles from the airport.

An emergency motion put down at the ADC next morning, calling on the CPSU to campaign against the Bush visit, was voted down after the union leadership, aided and abetted by some right-wing elements particularly from Shannon argued that it was 'too political.'

I always thought that everything a trade union does is 'political.'

Perhaps union general secretary Blair Horan might enlighten me.
