Too many watchdogs

A LEGAL services ombudsman is the latest in a growing list which includes that peculiar invention, the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission.

Surely we have enough regulatory, semi-judicial and judicial agencies to deal with complaints without adding another layer in the form of an ombudsman for an increasing array of services?

The creation of more such institutions only complicates administration and devalues the role of the ‘real’ ombudsman - the one appointed to investigate actions by Government departments and other designated public authorities.
