A few months on, and a few days before the vote, this prediction has been shown to be nonsense. In fact, there is almost a concerted campaign by people against the proposal to goad opponents into saying something outrageous.

Might the relatively restrained and unemotional public reaction actually come from the fact that the proposal is reasonable rather than extreme?
