Instead they have brought death and destruction to the region.
In the few weeks since the new government of Iraq was unveiled, some 400 people have lost their lives in continuing and increasing violence.
Insurgent attacks have increased to 70 a day over the same period.
This casualty list does not take into account the numbers who have lost their lives in Operation Matador, the US army’s offensive along the Euphrates, figures for which are unavailable at present.
Instead of becoming a land of peace, Iraq has become the battleground for Islamic militants throughout the world.
If the Iraq of today is what Bush and Blair consider to be a nation of peace and stability, then I must have missed something along the way.
