Should the real villains get a right old flogging?

EDWIN Cussen (Irish Examiner letters, March 8) recalls his experiences of witnessing public floggings, disfigurement and beheadings in Saudi Arabia.

Should the real villains get a right old flogging?

Surely this could not happen in an American protectorate, armed and largely occupied by the USA. The leader of the Free Nations of the World would never allow that! I am sure he means Iraq where all the bad things happen!

And then he advocates the same type of punishment for wrongdoers here.

Dia idir sinne agus an t-olc.

Criminals, by and large, are victims of a dysfunctional society, the products of a devalued educational system and a questionable religious education.

I wonder what punishment would he devise for our political leaders, An Roinn Oideachais, and the leaders of all religions who are directly responsible for the situation where vast numbers of young people have nothing left to believe in.

Would the medieval punishment of ‘boiling oil’ be recommended by Mr Cussen for those responsible?

And what would he suggest we do with the leaders of developed countries who have presided over a system where millions of people in Third World countries are exploited, where children die in their thousands every day while vast sums are squandered on armaments. Their guilt is unique in its enormity, compared to the guilt of petty criminals in our midst.
