Volunteers finally get their recognition

IN previous correspondence, I bemoaned the fact that the museum at Collins Barracks had given no recognition to the Volunteers executed at the facility during the War of Independence.

Having recently returned to the museum, I was delighted to observe that efforts have been made to rectify the situation.

While those executed are not specifically mentioned, I was pleased to see that a Roll of Honour, commemorating all of those members of the Cork No 1 Brigade, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the period 1916-23, is displayed in a prominent position.

The officer in charge, and his staff, deserve great credit for responding to public concerns on the issue and I thank them.

In a week when the IRA has announced an end to its military campaign, I now look forward to a future where we, as a nation, are no longer embarrassed of our past and where the memory of those who participated in the cause of national freedom are recognised and acknowledged with pride throughout Irish society.
