A former teacher of canon law at St Patrick’s seminary in Thurles, he rejected outright the idea of full Garda access to church files, once again showing, in effect, how canon law could provide an escape hatch for some bishops. No more needs to be said about the extent of the catastrophe facing the Catholic Church here.
