SOME commentators now think that up to 50% of Americans want ‘moral values’ entrenched in their constitution. Given that many voted for Bush for this reason, are we now witnessing a Christian mirror image of Muslim fundamentalism?

If this is so, minority beliefs - political, social, religious - are going to be marginalised as never before. This poses a number of questions, for instance, in the forthcoming election in Iraq. What will be Bush’s response if a party representing Muslim fundamentalism (assuming they would be allowed run) wins?

As a democracy, would Washington accept this? The recent past may give us an insight into how Washington would deal with such an eventuality. Who remembers Chile and Salvadore Allende?
