IN the run-up to the 2002 general election, a Fianna Fáil deputy for Cork North-Central, Noel O’Flynn, famously described asylum seekers as ‘spongers’ and ‘freeloaders’.

Yet only last week Mr O’Flynn undertook a 12-day exotic jaunt to South America, funded by the Irish taxpayer.

Only one question remains: how would asylum seekers now categorise the deputy?
