Stroke victims lose a great supporter

THE recent tributes to Mick Doyle revealed his many contributions to Ireland.

Stroke victims lose a great supporter

A less well known aspect was his active participation in the council on stroke of the Irish Heart Foundation, where he fought hard to improve services for those affected with the illness.

He was an extraordinary example to others, helping to dispel some of the negative attitudes associated with stroke.

His life, work and book on his experiences showed that with tenacity and support a full life can be resumed after stroke.

His sense of humour and no-nonsense approach was a constant spur to the professionals on the council to remember the priorities of the individual affected by stroke.

The lack of appropriate psychological and counselling support for those with stroke in Ireland was his most compelling message. Those who have had stroke, their families and healthcare professionals owe him deep gratitude which I would like to express on their behalf.
