Special needs pupils need understanding
I have heard many stories from children who are struggling in school and they wish for nothing more than to be able to get on with things like all those children who are doing well. And they could be doing a lot better, with the right support.
I would like to address the Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, on behalf of these children:
“Do you know what it is like to be different? Do you know what it is like to feel isolated from your peers? Do you know what it is like when teacher tells me to sit down and something inside in my head tells me to walk about? Do you know what it is like when I promise my parents to ‘be good’ in school and I can’t get it right?
“I need help in school. I need teacher to be patient with me, and not to be cross with me when I get it wrong. Make sure that when teacher looks me in the eye, I know I am not bad. I know I have special needs and I know teacher needs help with me, too.”
