I OBJECT to the attack on President Mary McAleese by Dr Hazlett Lynch (Irish Examiner letters, February 4).

More than one side has cause for regret

I concede that her remarks about Protestants being encouraged to hate Catholics in the North were unfortunate and ill advised.

However, as Dr Lynch pointed out, the President apologised unreservedly and, in doing so, endeavoured to clarify her comments by pointing out that Catholics also perpetrated bigotry.
