Ireland almost alone on VRT

IN Anne Cahill's article headlined "McCreevy backs British on tax plan" (The Irish Examiner, July 27) the statement that "Britain, which is the only EU country not to charge VRT" is quite erroneous.

Most countries in the EU (including Britain) do not charge VRT and indeed the only countries which have something akin to the system in Ireland are Denmark and Finland.

Moreover, last week’s European Commission proposal which you alluded to as saving “motorists 6,000 on the average family car” is quite likely to have exactly the reverse effect in Ireland increase prices substantially) due to Irish plans to levy VRT.
