Prices slipping below 2005 returns

While an improved export trade for calves has strengthened the demand in the marts for the early season arrivals suitable for the export trade, overall price comparisons are showing a slip of €30-€50/head on 2005.

Prices slipping below 2005 returns

The number of calves on offer at the mart sales are gradually increasing, particularly in the southern intensive dairy farming areas, with plenty of demand at all centres.

Price comparisons with this week last year - at the same mart sales - are showing overall a drop of €30 to €50 per head with some exceptions for breed and location. Continental heifers are bucking the trend by showing increases of €30-€60 per head in the prices being paid, while the Hereford bulls appear to be the biggest losers, with prices at some of the sales back up to €80/head on the same sale day in 2005.
