Media does a disservice to city image

IT is a full year since there was a murder in Limerick but the national media is still focusing on crime in the city.

The linking of the recent EuroMillions winner to the feuds in Limerick by elements of the media does a great disservice to the city. At a time when the media should welcome such a stroke of good fortune, they seek out a family link to dampen the celebrations.

Not one murder has been committed in Limerick in the past 12 months, yet the media ignores this good news and instead blackens a hard-working woman who had the good fortune to become extremely wealthy overnight.

Why focus on the feud when this woman was not involved in it?

The image of Limerick has suffered enough and when a good news story comes along, the media cannot embrace it with joy. Instead, they have to bring in ‘stab city’.

“What is the difference between the civil service in Limerick and Dublin,” Earwicker (Irish Examiner, July 30) reported one political observer as asking. “In Limerick, they stab you in the front.” This racist journalism should have no place in a national newspaper.
