The real winner

MUCH publicity has been given to the growth of Sinn Féin, but the real elections winner was Fine Gael.

The real winner

Deirdre Clune topped the poll in the south-east ward in Cork with a whopping 2,307 first preferences - the highest by far of any candidate in the city - followed by Jerry Buttimer in the south-west ward with 1,968 votes, the second highest vote in the city. FG held all its seats on the city council against the odds.

Nationally, FG has increased its local council seats from 277 to 291 and is within four seats of being the largest party in local government.
