Father of all projects for men only

TOMORROW is Fathers’ Day and to celebrate it a long-established parenting group known as parentalequality.ie is launching an innovative pilot project in the Co Louth area called Operation Seahorse.

Father of all projects for men only

This name was chosen to represent the uniqueness of fatherhood. The male seahorse is also very special and unique in the underwater world as it is he who is impregnated by the female and then carries and bears their young.

The male is pregnant for about three weeks before he gives birth. He then becomes pregnant again, usually within a matter of days.

Operation Seahorse is an exploration of fatherhood to a degree that has not yet been undertaken in this country. It’s a project that will be researched, designed and developed by men, and from a male perspective.

County Louth has been chosen for the pilot project as it is widely recognised by the health boards as having the highest birth rate outside of marriage, not just in this country but in the whole of Europe. Parental Equality has the credibility as well as the connectivity with thousands of men and expectant fathers that many of the statutory bodies understandably lack.

The initiative is about men coming up with their own solutions.

It involves a fundamental shift in the parenting paradigm, managing change in crisis pregnancies by specifically targeting positive, participative, planned pregnancy and parenting from a male perspective.

Specific areas of interest are:

Supports for, and obstacles to, men relating to family planning, pregnancy, abortion, marriage/divorce, guardianship and childcare.

Men’s health, including physical and emotional wellbeing, isolation and discrimination.

Balancing work and family life for men.
