Let’s act on human rights at home

I FIND the recent statement by the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, that he wants Ireland to lead rather than follow when it comes to human rights quite interesting.

I hope that in this case he will put his money where his mouth is and that this noble sentiment is not just empty rhetoric.

The Taoiseach could usefully begin by demanding of his Minster for Justice, Michael McDowell, a fair asylum system for refugees, which is blatantly absent at present.
