I WAS heartened to hear the Taoiseach’s recent call for “a new culture of active citizenship” and I have heeded his call for a renewal of republicanism “by marrying new ideas to steadfast values”.

Tara is a suitable case for active citizenship

Here’s a new idea for him. My steadfast values come from the continuity of my race, from the identity passed on to me over generations and espoused by many a great politician from the Hill of Tara and the steps of the GPO.

Equality, justice, truth ... a race not divided by colour or creed but united by our heritage, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally. Those values are symbolised most of all by the Hill of Tara.
