IT SEEMS extraordinary that CIE should be proposing to close rail lines, especially those used for freight.

At a board meeting of the European Logistics Association that I attended in Brussels last year, Ms Loyola de Palacio, EU Commissioner for Transport and Energy, stated that it is the Commission’s policy to do everything in its power to increase the amount of freight being carried by rail throughout Europe. Is there a lack of communication between the Department and CIE, or is it a case that the Department doesn’t think that Commission policy applies to Ireland ?
