The announcement on Wednesday night that singer Liam Payne had died in a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires led to an immediate outpouring of sadness and sympathy. 

This was expressed by fans holding a vigil at the hotel in Argentina and by many others around the world on various social media platforms.
