Conor McGregor to retire: Counted out

Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor has announced his retirement from the sport. This is not an occasion for regret or sadness, rather it is one of relief, one to be celebrated.

McGregor was a poor, often embarrassing representative of this country even if always an unofficial one. His loud, empty boastfulness, his relentless eye for the next opportunity, his contemptuous exploitation of his “fans” — and of himself — was far less than admirable.

This is not the first time McGregor announced his retirement. Speaking in 2016, the diminutive Dublin-born showman wrote: “I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya’s later.”

That promise may or may not be delivered this time but whether it is or not McGregor’s excesses seem an embodiment of all the sad, warning cliches that make success such a double-edged sword.

Thankfully, the great majority of Irish sportsmen and women represent their country in an inspiring, dignified way. McGregor scorned that opportunity.
