Playing catch-up:  Belated ‘green’ bus initiative

A small, but belated step towards cutting our toxic emissions was taken yesterday, when a “green bus” brought passengers from Cork City to Ringaskiddy. The bus was fuelled by biomethane, recovered through anaerobic digestion. This is a very positive development, but context is required.

Nottingham City Transport, which serves a population comparable to Cork’s, last month announced a plan to more than double its fleet of 53 biogas double-deck buses this year, with an additional 67 buses ordered. Next month, the first of these will be on the streets, with the expectation that all 120 biogas buses will be operational by year’s end.
