Second-level exams begin - Accounting takes place of education

The rite-of-passage exams, the Leaving and the Junior Certs, begin this morning. Almost 121,000 students will sit exams at one of 5,000 test centres.

Designed to assess how well students have absorbed the education offered by second-level schools, they have over time become much more.
