Traders in Cork City are determined to withhold commercial rates unless a car ban on the main thoroughfare of St Patrick’s Street is scrapped. That threat may be either superfluous, ironic or both.

The traders’ experience is of a huge drop in trade since the ban commenced. That means they will not be in a position to pay rates if trading continues to deteriorate, which means that revenue will drop sharply for the city.
