Israeli bombing of Syrian site: Don’t vilify

For more than a decade, it has been an open secret that Israel was responsible for the 2007 bombing of a site in Syria reputedly the location of a nuclear reactor under construction.

Israel’s military has now admitted it carried out the raid and authorities have released declassified material, including footage of the strike, as Israel intensifies its warnings over the presence of Iran in Syria.

The purpose of the admission is likely to be an attempt by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bolster his efforts to have scrapped the nuclear deal between world powers and Iran.

Israel is bound to face fresh criticism for bombing the site in Syria but it should be noted that, firstly, it has a right to protect its border and people from any threat, including nuclear. Secondly, the strike did the Middle East — and the wider world — a favour by destroying a site that later came under the control of Islamic State.

Had the jihadists gained control of an active military nuclear reactor, the consequences would have been unimaginable. We should thank the Israelis for this, not vilify them.
