Drivers must heed call to curb speed

NOBODY who saw last night’s RTÉ programme graphically depicting the domino effect of carnage on Ireland’s roads will be tempted to drive fast over the coming Bank Holiday weekend.

Looking beyond the cold statistics, the True Lives series charted the appalling impact of road accidents on the families and friends of victims.

So far this year 135 people have died on the roads.

More than words could portray, the RTÉ programme has put the spotlight on the appalling repercussions of speed and drink, the major causes of fatal road accidents.

It was appropriate that yesterday also saw the launch of a campaign by the National Safety Council designed to reduce the number of road deaths caused by speeding.

The stark reality is that one-third of all road deaths can be attributed to speeding and the main offenders are males between the age of 17 and 30.

Hopefully, with the onset of yet another black-spot weekend, drivers will heed the warning to slow down.
