a Personal Public Service (PPS) number, which will have a wide range of personal details on a central data base that can be accessed various government departments when people are dealing with the State in relation to different matters, like health care, welfare entitlements, income tax, driving licences, passports, etc.

The Departments of Social Welfare and Health are already using new numbers.

A new smart card, with a computerised strip containing the necessary electronic details, will be issued to all concerned early next year.
