DNA system must be streamlined

INTERMINABLE delays in processing DNA samples from crime scenes and suspects in Ireland is perplexing by international standards.

While the average delay in this country is around eight weeks, tests can take up to three months to complete. In contrast, the same tests take only five to seven days in Britain.

The importance of a DNA fingerprint from a crime scene is that it can exclude all suspects except the person whose sample it matches.
