Capital of Culture - Cork to capitalise on city culture

AS Cork embarks on an exciting journey to be crowned European Capital of Culture 2005, it is refreshing that much of the scepticism which greeted the initial announcement has evaporated.

Capital of Culture - Cork to capitalise on city culture

There was pride in the air yesterday when the distinction of emulating past cities of culture, ranging from Copenhagen to Madrid, Helsinki and Prague, was officially unveiled by Minister John O’Donoghue.

This is a time both of challenge and opportunity for Cork, a time for people to give their unstinting support to the venture.

Funding will be vital and so it is encouraging to see the generous support of AIB, which has its roots in Cork, plus that of local credit unions behind this epic journey.

Above all, the deep involvement of local people through their own communities will distinguish this year-long celebration of all that is best about Cork, its proud people and its vibrant culture.
