THE Morrison Tribunal of Inquiry into allegations of corruption against some members of the Garda Síochána in Donegal formally opened yesterday amid doubt that, it its present restricted format, it will be successful in arriving at a conclusion sufficiently transparent to calm public concern.

In his opening statement, Peter Charleton SC, for the tribunal, said that it could be over very quickly if people came forward and told the truth.

Yet, crucial witnesses in the extended McBrearty family, who have made some of the most serious allegations ever levelled at members of the gardaí, have completely distanced themselves from the inquiry, and their position was well known in advance.
