Bin protests smell of anarchy

IT was deeply ironic, on a day when the Government launched its multi-million euro information campaign on the country’s waste crisis, that protesters again blocked bin collections in Dublin.

Bin protests smell of anarchy

A strong whiff of anarchy is now blowing through the streets of the capital. Because of the actions of some 100 people opposed to paying refuse charges, thousands of citizens have been left with waste piling up outside their homes.

Environment Mr Cullen hit the nail squarely on the head when he accused the anti-bin charge protesters of “holding the capital city to ransom”.

Nationally, the action has gained little sympathy. Out of 14,000 callers to the Marian Finucane Show, three-quarters were in support of the principle that the polluter pays.

With people in jail and public health at risk, it is encouraging that the blockade of collection depots has been called off for now.

The protesters should go no further and should end their misguided protest which is anti-community, anti-environment and anti-democratic.
