The Parents for Justice group, which withdrew from the Dunne Inquiry which was set up to examine the retention of organs during post mortem examinations, yesterday reiterated its call that the inquiry be established on a statutory basis.

Their renewed demand came on foot of a newspaper report which claimed that the brains of hundreds of deceased adults, including some suicide victims and people who suffered from depression, were retained for research purposes by hospitals without the consent of the next of kin.

Parents for Justice spokesperson Ms Fionnuala O’Reilly, said they always understood that the organ retention scandal was wider than was accepted and the weekend revelations confirmed that view.
