The Revenue Commissioners’ relentless battle against tax-dodgers highlights the fact that there are too many people in this country who still reckon the risk of defeating the system is worth the potential return.

The figures just published of monies recovered by the tax policing agency, representing €28 million for the first three months of this year, however, prove that all too often trying to beat the system is a very costly exercise, and that is as it should be.

Of the 285 cases contained in their latest report, there were two separate settlements of more than €2 million each, and four of more than €500,000, all of which came from non-resident bogus accounts.
