Probation scheme a huge success

JUSTICE MINISTER Michael McDowell’s plan to establish a system of hostels, halfway houses and support projects for offenders as an alternative to custody is bound to win public approval.

Going on the success of the Bridge scheme, an intensive approach to probation as a means of preparing offenders to re-enter society, the project appears to be model of how Exchequer money should be spent.

As the minister said, there is more to closing the prison door when offenders are released.
