IRA statement - Disbandment is the only way forward

GROWING speculation that the IRA will prevaricate and refuse to disband when it issues its anticipated statement has given rise to grave concern — and rightly so.

It would be a travesty if Sinn Féin’s private army were to survive in one form or another after taking the historic step to enter what Gerry Adams describes as a “new mode” predicated onpeaceful and non-violent activities.

Following yesterday’s meeting with Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, the Sinn Féin leader called for an end to speculation about the timing of an IRA statement. The focus, he said, should be on the type of positive outcome which he was seeking.
