In November 2024, Tommy Cahill found himself, like many of his generation, living abroad.

He was working as a teacher in Dubai when he faced an unexpected dilemma.

His father had just been elected as a TD and was preparing to vacate his council seat in Co Kerry.

What more could a young man want than to return from the sun to the depths of winter to take up an often thankless role in a rural part of the country from which many young people had moved away.
