I was tearing out the door to follow Lynn Boylan on the canvass when Mary Lou’s letter arrived. It was one of those personally addressed missives that only Fianna Fáil used to be able to afford.

“Michael, a chara,” it began, and on Mary Lou went, rolling out Sinn Féin policy about an alternative, easier way and asking me to vote for Lynn.

Mary Lou is the way, the truth, and the light for Sinn Féin right now. She’s bigger than Jesus, bigger than Gerry Adams, opening up prairies of female and middle-class votes. If you didn’t know better, you might think that the party was trying to clone her, to process a group of Mini-Mary Lou election candidates.
